February 10th, 2013, is Kitakyushu’s 50th birthday!

The City of Kitakyushu was founded on February 10th, 1963, with the equal merger of the five former cities of Moji, Kokura, Wakamatsu, Yahata and Tobata.

Five cities merging together on a mutual basis is something rarely attempted in the world, and it was enough of a ground breaking event for an inquiry commission from the United Nations to be dispatched in the year following the merger. It's been 50 years since the merger, and on February 10th, 2013, Kitakyushu will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the city.

During the 50th anniversary there will be events related to sports, culture, food and more. There will also be commemorative projects of various kinds.

Everyone please join in the celebrations!
