International Conferences & Forums in Kitakyushu Eco-Month (Overview)

The City of Kitakyushu celebrated the 50th anniversary of its municipal organization in 2013 by hosting a number of environmental events during October, which was designated as “Kitakyushu Eco-Month.” International conferences and forums, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Cabinet Secretariat and Cabinet Office, Promotion Council for the “FutureCity” Initiative, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), the United Nations University (UNU), and other organizations, were held over a four-day period from October 18, 2013 at the Kitakyushu International Conference Center.

Over 2,200 people participated in the meetings, including 500 participants from 50 countries around the world. On October 20th, the Mayor of Kitakyushu delivered a summary message on the three-day meeting (English version: 70 KB).

Through the meetings, Kitakyushu was able to deliver a strong message to the world and facilitate a common understanding and agreement on the necessity of public participation to create sustainable cities through the development of new values by incorporating green growth, the environment, and socio-economic issues; the importance of cooperation with cities and countries/international organizations; and the use of knowledge acquired over the years.
