Information for Foreign Residents Regarding National Health Insurance

National Health Insurance (NHI) is a public medical insurance system in Japan, which covers medical expenses incurred due to illness and injury through insurance premiums and subsidies from the national government. Upon showing your Health Insurance Certificate at the reception counter of a medical institution, you will be obliged to pay only part of the medical expenses.

Foreign residents who will be staying in Japan for more than three months must notify the National Health Insurance and Pension Division at the ward office where their resident registration was issued and complete the procedures to become a member of the national health insurance program. The Health Insurance Certificate will be posted at a later date as registered mail. Also, in the events such as where a foreign resident returns to their home country, moves out of the ward they are registered in, or becomes a member of a company's health insurance after being employed, they must complete the procedures required for withdrawing from the national health insurance program.

For more detailed information, please refer to the Guidance Concerning National Health Insurance for Foreigners.
