The Sound of Summer in Kokura: Kokura Gion Taiko

Kokura Gion Taiko has almost 400 years of history and is one of Japan’s most exciting summer festivals. It features performances with taiko drums that have been designated as one of Fukuoka's Intangible Cultural Assets.

Starting with the opening ceremony on July 1st, groups from various neighborhoods and companies will be practicing their taiko performance in preparation for the main event on July 15th.

The highlights of the festival include the Taiko Performance Competition that will be held on July 16th in the open area in front of the Otemon Gate at Kokura Castle, the Stationary Taiko Performance Competition that will be held on the 17th, and the Taiko Drum Square at Komonji Ave.

On the 16th (from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.) you will be able to experience drumming a taiko drum yourself at the Omotenashi Taiko Event at Katsuyama Bridge. Make sure to drop by and enjoy the Kokura Gion Taiko performances!
