Kitakyushu Science and Research Park

We are developing and constructing Kitakyushu Science and Research Park in the northwestern area of Kitakyushu, which is already home to a number of universities and research institutes. Our purpose is to realize an 'Academic and research-oriented city open to future generations in Asia,' which is one of the ideal city concepts presented in the fundamental plan of our city, 'Kitakyushu Renaissance.' By inviting to the park universities and research institutes for education and research in the fields of advanced science and technology, we seek to create a core academic research base in Asia and, with the cooperation of industrial circles, make great advances as a creative industrial city in the 21st century.
Currently, the Park incorporates one undergraduate school faculty and four graduate school faculties, including the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and the Graduate School of Environmental Engineering of the University of Kitakyushu, the Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering of Kyushu Institute of Technology, and the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems of Waseda University; eight research institutes, including Fukuoka Research Center for Recycling Systems and the Kyushu Laboratory of Advanced Research Institute for Science and Engineering in the Graduate School of Waseda University, as well as some 40 enterprises. Vigorous research and development activities are carried out through cooperation between business and academic circles.

Science and Research Park development plan

The Science and Research Park has been developed in three steps as part of the land readjustment project. While making use of the surrounding nature and the urban environment, we aim to create a city that attracts advanced technology-related education and research institutes, and provides excellent residences.

Kitakyushu e-PORT Plan

In view of the rapid progress in IT technologies, we regard 'e-PORT' as the third 'Information port,' in addition to Hibikinada Deep Water Port and Harbor(Hibiki Container Terminal) and Kitakyushu Airport. Accordingly, we are preparing environments related to IT as a social foundation supporting citizens' lives, company activities and administrative services, and are promoting the construction of IT industry bases. Based on this plan, we are promoting the generation of new IT services in private companies and autonomous bodies, while simultaneously fostering personnel to inherit basic technologies for IT services for the purpose of encouraging and attracting information-related industries in the city.
