International Exchange and Cooperative Activities

Kitakyushu International Association

The Kitakyushu International Association (KIA) is conducting activities to deepen mutual understanding and friendship with other countries and to contribute to international peace through international exchange, mainly by residents. The Association holds grass-roots events for international exchange, conducts exchange activities with sister and friendship cities, provides daily life information and offers consultation services to residents of foreign nationality.

Kitakyushu International Techno-Cooperative Association

The Association was established in 1980 to offer training and technical cooperation to developing countries, under the theme of 'Sustainable development.' At present the Association offers some 50 training courses for groups or individuals, at the same time engaging in a wide range of technical cooperation, including surveys on international technical cooperation, consulting services, and the collection and provision of information.

World's leading research institutes

Contributing to international society through research on East Asia The International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development (Joint research institute with the University of Pennsylvania)

The International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development (ICSEAD) is a unique international research institute jointly founded in 1989 by the City of Kitakyushu and the University of Pennsylvania. The Centre's major activities include international joint research, symposiums and seminars on economy and society in East Asia, and the promotion of exchange with researchers and financial experts from East Asia, the United States and other countries, as well as from Japan. The 'Pan-Yellow Sea Economic Region' advocated by the Centre has been highly appreciated as pioneering research by a wide range of people in academic, business and administrative circles. The results of this research lead to specific measures and contribute to mutual development in East Asia. The Centre's numbers of highly qualified staff are announcing a series of new research results, and instructing students and giving lectures at the graduate school of Kyushu University and the University of Kitakyushu.

Surveys and researches on gender

Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women

Regarding gender, development and environment, the Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women (KFAW) conduct surveys and research, provides international exchange and training, and collects and provides information on problems concerning gender or women, through the themes 'mutual learning,' 'creating close relationships,' and 'helping one another' for the improvement of the status of Asian women, their solidarity and progress. Major activities of the Forum include joint research with domestic or overseas research institutes, convening of the Kitakyushu Conference on Asian Women, international training such as the Seminar on Policies to Mainstream Gender for Government Officers, and KFAW College to internationalize students; in addition, it issues the information magazine 'Asian Breeze' and the research journal 'Journal of Asian Women's Studies.

Research and educational institutes for contemporary arts

Contemporary Art Center - CCA Kitakyushu

In 1997, through the cooperation of the City of Kitakyushu and local private organizations, CCA Kitakyushu opened as the first public organization for education and research specializing in the contemporary arts. CCA invites artists and specialists in diverse fields, including human, social and natural sciences, who are at the forefront of their fields, conducts research programs for teaching and fostering young artists at home and overseas, holds exhibitions for new works and seminars, and produces and publishes artists・books to invigorate regional cultures.
