Procedures for Taking Entrance Examinations

In principle, you must have completed 12 years of formal education to apply for admission to a university, junior college or professional training college in Japan. International students who fulfill the eligibility criteria are given entrance examinations, which combines several examinations (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, Japanese Language Proficiency Test, etc.). Some schools set their own admission requirements. To gain detailed information about entrance examinations, or if you are unsure whether your qualifications meet the admission requirements, please consult the school of your choice.

Immigration Procedures

People wishing to enter Japan must apply for a visa first. There are several types of visas, and the person’s status of residence (period of stay) is determined according to his/her reason for coming to Japan, status and position. The one applicable to international students for study at a university or a Japanese language school, etc. in Japan is “Student.” After you are granted admission by your school, apply for a “Student” visa.

about immigration procedures.
  • Temporary exit from Japan: If you return to your home country temporarily or visit another country for a short period, you must apply for a re-entry permit at a regional immigration bureau before leaving Japan.
  • Extension of period of stay: If you wish to stay in Japan beyond the period of authorized stay granted to you at your time of entry into Japan, you must file for an extension of stay with a regional immigration bureau, etc.
  • Change of the status of residence: If you wish to discontinue the activity permitted under your current status of residence (student) and engage in other activities (employment, etc.), you must apply for a change of status of residence at a regional immigration bureau, etc.
  • Student visa holders are not allowed to work. If you wish to engage in part-time work, you need to apply for permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted.

Scholarships

In Japan, there are scholarship programs for international students, but only a few scholarships cover all the costs of study; most aim to cover only a portion of the student’s living expenses and tuition fees. Be sure to make an appropriate financial plan so that you do not have to rely solely on scholarships.

  • How to Apply
    • Before coming to Japan: Scholarships you can apply for and receive results prior to coming to Japan (very few options)
    • After coming to Japan: Scholarships you can apply for in Japan after enrolling in a school (many options)
  • Check if there are any restrictions on application requirements, such as age, country/region, school enrolled in Japan, major or specialty field, etc.
  • Check what screening examinations (document screening, interviews, written examinations, etc.) are required.
  • The majority of scholarships require you to apply through the school you are enrolled in. Please confirm the relevant details at your school.
